DapuStor and CUHK's Joint ZNS SSD Research Accepted at HPCA 2025
DapuStor Corporation is proud to announce that its pioneering research, titled "Reviving In-Storage Hardware Compression on ZNS SSDs through Host/SSD Collaboration" has been accepted by the IEEE International Symposium on High-Performance Computer Architecture (HPCA) 2025. This research was jointly conducted by Dr. Tao Lu's team at DapuStor and Prof. Ming-Chang Yang's team at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).
01 Tackling Challenges in ZNS SSDs with Innovation
Zoned Namespace (ZNS) SSDs are a promising evolution in storage technology but face two critical challenges in leveraging in-storage hardware compression accelerators:
Resource and Task Mismatch: Managing variable-length compressed data strains the limited DRAM resources within ZNS SSDs.
I/O Stack Interface Gaps: Current ZNS interfaces lack support for communicating variable-length post-compression data sizes back to the host for effective zone space management.
To address these issues, DapuStor and CUHK’s joint research introduces a lightweight extension to the ZNS interface through innovative host-device co-design. This approach efficiently transfers compressed data to the host for metadata updates, fully harnessing the computational potential of in-storage hardware accelerators while minimizing DRAM overhead. By leveraging existing application-level indexing, the research eliminates complex in-device index maintenance. Comprehensive evaluations using real-world applications such as RocksDB confirm the effectiveness of this mechanism.
02 Collaborative Innovation in Flash Storage Technology
This achievement highlights DapuStor’s commitment to advancing ZNS SSD technology through innovative host-SSD collaboration. The company welcomes researchers and engineers worldwide to join discussions and collaborations to drive the evolution of flash memory and data compression technologies. Stay tuned to DapuStor for the latest updates and insights into future technological roadmaps.
